Some Detroit Pistons fans have been very critical of Tom Gores for taking so long to find a head coach and general manager.

Well, today you can mark head coach off that list.

Former head coach of the Toronto Raptors, and current Coach of the Year, Dwane Casey has agreed to a five-year contract, worth about seven million ler year, to coach the Pistons.

It has been a long drawn and out process by the Pistons. With the offseason officially starting after the Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers for the NBA Championship, it was time for the Pistons to pull the trigger.

Ime Udoka was the other candidate in the running for the position.

Casey was the head coach of the Raptors since 2011, and took them to a conference finals appearance in the 2016 playoffs.

The Raptors were the first seed in the Eastern Conference this year, finishing with a record of 59-23. Casey and the Raptors had high expectations for the team this year, but lost to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the semi-finals in an embarrassing sweep.

This led to Casey getting fired, even after being awarded Coach of the Year by his peers.

Casey is well-respected by players across the league, but was this the correct hire by Gores and the Pistons?

The Pistons took their time, interviewing many candidates for the position. After a very long process, Gores believed that Casey was indeed the right person for the job and went after him.

According to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press, Casey will meet with players in Los Angeles, where most the players are working out and training. He will then head to Detroit after finishing up some Father’s Day plans.
