Despite limited cap room, the Detroit Pistons were able to sign a quality player on the first day of free agency. Glenn Robinson III has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $8.3 million deal with the team.

The Detroit Pistons have signed free-agent forward Glenn Robinson III, according to a report from Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports. Robinson has agreed to a two-year deal worth $8.3 million.

The 24-year-old only played 23 games with the Indiana Pacers last season. In October, Robinson underwent surgery to repair medial and lateral ligaments in his left ankle.

In those 23 games, he averaged 4.1 points and 1.6 rebounds on 42.4 percent shooting. Robinson only played 14.7 minutes per game, but managed to hit 41.2 percent of his 3-point attempts. His per-36 numbers are as follows: 10.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.

As you can see in the chart above, Robinson is most effective in spot-up situations. Thirty-six total possessions are a very small sample size, so take that with a grain of salt.

But he did average 1.361 points per possession (PPP) in that category. Synergy gave him a rating of “Excellent” for this particular play type.

Robinson also fulfills a positional need for the Pistons. He is naturally a small forward, which is an area where Detroit is currently thin. Stanley Johnson is the only true small forward under contract for next season.

At the time of this post, Detroit has not picked up Reggie Bullock‘s option for next year. Anthony Tolliver, who can play the three or the four, is an unrestricted free agent. The arrival of Robinson could possibly signal an end for both Bullock and Tolliver in Detroit.

So while Robinson’s statistics won’t jump out at you, the Pistons needed another wing with size in their rotation. He is also a reliable defender, allowing only 0.849 PPP on defense last season.
