Detroit Pistons: Differences between Dwane Casey and Stan Van Gundy
Player relationships
Dwane Casey, who be no means is a soft coach, is much more of a calming presence than Stan Van Gundy is at the helm of a team. Van Gundy is more from the school of tough love than Casey.
Following the firing of Casey in May of this year, his star point guard had this to say.
Van Gundy meanwhile was known for more of a blunt coaching style that could anger his players.
While Casey did have his own trials and tribulations with his players in Toronto, Van Gundy has definitely had a rockier road when it comes to relationships.
Reggie Jackson famously fired back at Van Gundy after comments he made following a December loss last season at home to Denver.
“We all got to do our jobs, coaches in it with the players, so we all got to do our jobs.” Jackson seemingly called out Van Gundy’s decision to start Reggie Bullock over Stanley Johnson in the game, saying “I don’t coach, unfortunately I don’t coach.”
This column goes to Casey, for not only his past, but for the fact that he is different from Van Gundy, a voice the players had clearly grown tired of hearing with the lack of success.
