Detroit Pistons: Differences between Dwane Casey and Stan Van Gundy
Player development
During his time in Toronto, Casey helped change the careers of players like Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Fred VanVleet into the players they are today.
DeRozan’s scoring increased from 16.7 to 27.3 points per game during Casey’s tenure and Lowry went from averaging 11.6 to 22.4 points per game during Casey’s run.
Additionally, VanVleet was an undrafted player who got major minutes on a 59-win team last season. Casey was able to turn unheralded players like Delon Wright and Pascal Siakam into solid contributors as well.
Van Gundy on the other hand struggled mightily in Detroit with player development. Stanley Johnson got worse after his rookie year, Henry Ellenson spent the majority of the last two seasons on the Grand Rapids Drive, and second-round draft pick Spencer Dinwiddie only turned into a solid player once he left Detroit and the coaching of Van Gundy.
