Detroit Pistons: Two players could represent team in 2019 All Star game
By Travis Gibbs
The 2019 All Star game is quickly approaching and there are two players from the Detroit Pistons that could represent their team in Charlotte.
Andre Drummond and Blake Griffin are two players from the Detroit Pistons that could realistically represent their team in the 2019 All Star game.
Before I go any further, I’m going to just say that I believe fan-based voting for All Star games is completely ridiculous.
It put almost the entire Kansas City Royals starting lineup in an MLB All Star game not too long ago. This year, it’s putting guys like Jeremy Lin and Vince Carter in a conversation they do not belong in.
Yes, Lin has more votes than guys like John Wall and Bradley Beal. Carter currently has more votes than Drummond. It’s all sympathy because fans want to see him get this “honor” in his final season.
Statistically, there’s no reason that Blake Griffin shouldn’t be in the All Star game. He’s played like one all season.
Griffin is the only reason that the Pistons are still in any kind of playoff conversation.
He’s averaging a career-high 24.8 points per game. Griffin is also averaging more rebounds per game (8.7) since the 2013-2014 season.
Griffin has over 192,000 votes which is is sixth in front court voting. Based on numbers, he should be higher. However, it’s because of the team he plays for.
Drummond is very much a borderline All Star.
He is still the NBA’s leading rebounder right now even though his personal numbers have dropped. Part of that has to do to with the fact that he’s playing next to Griffin.
Right now, Drummond is averaging a career-high 17.1 points per game. He’s also established himself as a rim protector. Drummond is averaging almost two blocks per game.
Drummond is currently eighth in among the front court players in the east. He’s behind Vince Carter by close to 10,000 votes.
It will be an actual disaster if Drummond were to miss an All Star appearance because of Carter receiving more votes.
Neither Griffin or Drummond will start in this year’s game. It would be Griffin’s sixth selection and Drummond’s third.
