The Detroit Pistons are still returning from the weekend full of festivities. That weekend was fun and all, but this weekend could make or break the season.

All Star weekend is over. The weekend full of festivities was fun, and for those players who did not get invited to the weekend, a much needed break was great for them.

Now, it’s time to get back to business and worry about making the playoffs.

Currently, the Detroit Pistons are tied for the eighth seed with the Miami Heat, and are only .5 games ahead of the ninth place Orlando Magic.

Moving forward, there is no room for any slip-ups by the Pistons. The Pistons have to win the games they’re expected to win, and they’ll have to win some games they aren’t expected to win. First test will be this Friday, against the Atlanta Hawks; who are 19-39.

The Hawks are the 12th seed in the Eastern Conference, and they are definitely a team the Pistons should and have to beat. With a win over Trae Young and the Hawks on Friday, the Pistons can unbreak the tie with the Heat and inch closer to the 30-29 Brooklyn Nets; who are the sixth seed.

Friday’s game means so much for this reason; the Detroit Pistons will take on the Miami Heat a day later on Saturday. This back-to-back could be a set of games the Pistons and its fans look back on when/if they make the playoffs.

If the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Heat on Thursday and the Pistons handle their business this weekend, the Pistons could have a two game lead on the ninth place team.

Also, they could see themselves take over seventh seed as well. The Charlotte Hornets are 4-6 in their last 10 games and are only .5 games ahead of the Pistons. With the Hornets struggling recently and a favorable weekend for the Pistons coming up, we could see the Pistons slotted at the seventh seed on Monday.

The Detroit Pistons have put themselves in a position where they don’t need to rely on other teams. They don’t need to hope for other teams to lose in order for them to make the Playoffs. The Pistons are in the position where they handle their own destiny, no matter what the teams around them do.

Last weekend was fun. Blake Griffin representing the city and the team in the All Star game was a great sight to see.

But, that weekend doesn’t matter.

THIS weekend will set the tone for the rest of the season, and could be what we look back on if the Detroit Pistons make the playoffs.
