Khyri Thomas: Season Review

Khyri Thomas didn’t play much for the Detroit Pistons this past season, but that doesn’t stop us from going over his season in review!

The Detroit Pistons second-round pick in the 2018 draft by the 76ers was traded to Detroit on the day of the draft. Thomas made the most of his rookie season by playing with the Pistons and the G-League team, Grand Rapids Drive.

For those of you who may not know much about Khyri Thomas, let’s fill you in. Thomas attended Creighton University for three years where he was a two time Big East Defensive Player of the Year.

During his junior year at Creighton, Thomas averaged 15.1 points, 2.8 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game.

There’s a brief spell on the 6’3 guard.

In his rookie campaign with Detroit, Thomas played in 26 regular season games and made three appearances in the playoffs. Thomas averaged 7.5 minutes per game and 2.3 points per game during the regular season.

Where Thomas made his impact, was with the G-League affiliate team. He spent time with the Drive, helping them to a playoff appearance.

In just 10 games with the Drive, he averaged 20.3 points while shooting 50% from the field. He also shot 49% from behind the arc.

Thomas was a big help to the Drive and impacted its offense a lot.

The potential is there for Thomas. In his short stint in the G-League, he proved that he is a scorer and can score at will.

He had a 32-point performance against the Greensboro Swarm. In that game, Thomas had confidence and was able to score at will.

Thomas has a scorer’s mentality and if he continues to get his experience and work on his game, he can be a pretty solid role player for the Pistons.

Look for Thomas to get a lot of action during the summer league and he will be one of the top scorers for the Detroit Pistons.

When Thomas would make his appearances in NBA games, you could see that when he had the ball in his hands, he wanted to make a play.

There were some open shots that he took where he missed and somewhere he made. That’s what you want to see out of a rookie.

Head coach Dwane Casey’s confidence in the rookie guard grew as the season went along.

That’s a good sign if you are a rookie. Thomas will continue to mature as a player and look to improve in areas on his game.
