Andre Drummond was pivotal in helping the Detroit Pistons return to the playoffs this season, but how did his season go, let’s take a look.
The Numbers (in 33.5 minutes per game):
- 17.3 points per game
- 15.6 rebounds per game
- 1.4 assists per game
- 1.7 steals per game
- 1.7 blocks per game
Andre Drummond played in 79 games this season for the Detroit Pistons and shot 53.3 percent from the field, and 59 percent from the free throw line. These stats were good enough for him to lead the league in total rebounding, offensive, and defensive rebounding!
Before all of you start thinking that rebounding doesn’t matter, it does. It finishes a defensive possession or in the case of an offensive rebound, allows the offense another chance to score. Andre’s 5.4 offensive rebounds also resulted in him leading the league in second-chance points with 5.5 per game.
Andre also finished 5th in the league in total steals, and 6th in total blocks (if you prefer per game stats, he still finished top 10 in both!)! No other player in the league even came close to that feat! He also managed 69 double-doubles this season, enough to lead the league, and also the most he’s ever had in a season!
Andre also finished second among Detroit Pistons in +/- with a +2.2, only second to Wayne Ellington who only played in 28 games.
By the Eye
Andre Drummond was easily the most important Detroit Pistons to play this season. He is the anchor for the defense and is a constantly improving defensive talent. Andre looked dramatically better this season defensively, and most numbers would support that.
He contested more shots, looked a much better positional defender and was a huge factor in Detroit getting to the playoffs. I’m not going to play armchair psychologist and mention his “poor body language”, because I care about the result, and the reality is he had a fantastic season.
Andre has already started work this offseason, and he’s already lost some weight by shaving his glorious beard!
In Conclusion
Andre Drummond had a fantastic season for the Detroit Pistons, his best for the team in fact. He was the most important player on the team and improved on last season.
I look forward to seeing what the big guy can do next season with more improvement.
