The Detroit Pistons have lost their assistant general manager, Sachin Gupta, to the Minnesota Timberwolves after only one season.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Minnesota Timberwolves have hired Detroit Pistons assistant GM Sachin Gupta as their Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations.

The Timberwolves previously hired Gersson Rosas to be their President of Basketball Operations, and Rosas and Gupta worked together during their time with the Houston Rockets.

Gupta was hired as the Pistons assistant GM the last offseason, as the front office tore down everything from the Stan Van Gundy era and started fresh. Gupta’s role focused on analytics, and perhaps he is most well known for being the creator of the ESPN trade machine.

Pistons fans were delighted to hear of his signing with the team, as it signaled towards more of an analytically driven front office; those of which you’ll find in almost every successful franchise in the National Basketball Association.

Gupta had previously worked under Daryl Morey in Houston as a special advisor before signing with the Detroit Pistons the last off-season. Houston, as many know, are the golden standard for the analytical movement. It took the Rockets to a game seven against the Golden State Warriors last season and many believe would’ve gotten them to the finals if Chris Paul did not go down.

Pistons fans saw the difference immediately this season with an increased emphasis on three-point attempts. The Detroit Pistons finished sixth in the three-point attempts per game this season with 34.8 per game.

But, the Pistons were just 23rd in the league in percentage shooting a disappointing 34.8 percent from downtown.

The Pistons made the concerted effort to more of an analytical type of game while Gupta was employed in Detroit, and hope to continue what he helped establish in his one season here.

James Edwards of the Athletic has reported that the Pistons will look both in-house, as well as at outside candidates when making their decision on who they would like to pursue to replace Gupta.
