Why you should use the Detroit Pistons when playing NBA2k19 Online
By Ben Lanza
Many NBA fanatics play NBA2k19 Online. Why should Pistons fans use the Detroit Pistons when playing online?
In the Play Now Online mode of NBA 2k19, there has been a newfound importance on the team you select given the introduction of the tier system. All of the current NBA teams, historic teams, and all-time teams were split up into three tiers. The Detroit Pistons are in Tier two, with Tier 1 being the highest and Tier 3 being the lowest. In order to move up the ranks of online 2k, you need a certain number of wins in each tier. The Detroit Pistons are one of the best choices in Tier 2 for a more than a few reasons, and playing with them will help you keep your win percentage high, and to continue to fly up the ranks.
The Competition
The number one reason that the Pistons are always my choice in Tier 2 is the choice of other teams in Tier 2. A lot of the current NBA teams in that tier are middle of the pack playoff teams without a real superstar, which evidently makes them harder to play with. These are teams like the Brooklyn Nets, Orlando Magic, Indiana Pacers, and Utah Jazz.
With Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond on the Pistons, it is very possible that the two highest rated players on the floor will be on your team in Tier 2. The one exception with the current NBA teams is the Portland Trail Blazers, who don’t fit that mold. If your opponent picks the Blazers, you will be in for a tougher game. There are also some of the historic teams with Michael Jordan, however I tend to shy away from the historic teams because the lack of three-point shooting makes it difficult to win in this game.
Pistons Play Style
How you use the Pistons will also be important in determining your fate in an online match. When on offense, your first priority should always be to get the ball to Blake Griffin on the wing or in the corner. From there, you can do a few things depending on who is guarding Blake; you can call an isolation, or run the pick and roll with Andre Drummond. Either way, the outcome is usually the same. Griffin has a high enough acceleration and speed with the ball that it will be fairly easy to run right to the rim. When you get to the rim, Griffin will either try for some insane dunk, or go for a layup that is contested by Drummond’s man. Make or miss, more times than not Drummond will be there for the rebound and you will have an easy put-back.
When Griffin is the bench, you can channel your inner 2015-2016 Pistons and run Reggie Jackson – Andre Drummond pick and rolls every time down the floor. Those can work the same way; just with a few more misses from Reggie. If there are mostly bench players on the court, Ish Smith’s high-speed with the ball can get into the lane whenever you want, and that play can result in a lob to Thon Maker or a kick out to a shooter like Luke Kennard.
It is also important to recognize that in 2k19 the Pistons actually are a very good defensive team. Reggie Jackson and Bruce Brown both play solid perimeter defense, and both Griffin and Drummond play stellar interior defense. And of course, Andre’s rebound rating is through the roof, so all defensive rebounds will be yours, and give you a chance to run the break, which is killer in 2k19.
Familiarity with the team
If you are reading this page, there is a high likelihood that you know more about the Pistons than the average person. Using a team you know is just as important as using a good team. I can’t count how many open threes I’ve gotten with Blake because my opponent backed off not thinking he could shoot. Knowing what the players are good at and what they are not is the easiest way to win in 2k19.
Stick to what you know, and the team you know, and you will be competitive against any opponent in the gaming world. Using the Pistons is probably not the sexiest choice, but it may be the smartest.
