The Detroit Pistons biggest hole is the backup point guard position. Can they lure Charlotte Hornets’ guard Jeremy Lamb to Detroit?

The Detroit Pistons main priority this free agency will be filling the whole at the backup point guard. For the past three seasons, Ish Smith and a few third string point guards have tried to fill the void of the position.

Ish Smith was a solid backup point guard behind Reggie Jackson. And even though he couldn’t provide starting production when Reggie Jackson was injured, he absolutely put in the most effort he could.

But his lack of shooting caused issues for the Pistons spacing and the Pistons three-point percentage. Ish shot 31.4 percent from three on 1.6 attempts a night in the three seasons with the Pistons.

The Pistons are likely willing to let him walk in free agency in order to sign a backup point guard that can shoot the ball.

Jeremy Lamb will go into free agency looking to get paid and receive meaningful minutes. Although he might be out of the Pistons price range, some players will get overpaid and underpaid. The Pistons could get lucky if Lamb is offered a long-term deal.

Lamb has spent the last 4 seasons with the Charlotte Hornets. In the first three seasons, Lamb averaged 10.7 points per game, 4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists on 45.6 percent shooting and 32.9 percent from three. He only started in 23 of those games.

But his fourth season with Charlotte would see him start for a majority of the season. His stats would take a major jump; averaging 15.3 points per game, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists on 44 percent shooting and 34.8 percent from three.

Although the shooting is lower than what the Pistons need, Lamb has shown improvement shooting the ball since coming into the league. The 26-year-old was drafted in 2012 by the Oklahoma City Thunder. He and Andre Drummond both played together in UCONN.

Their bond and connection together could impact Lamb’s decision if he were to decide to play in Detroit. He could play big minutes behind Reggie Jackson if he were to join. With Reggie Jackson playing all 82 games last season, the Pistons will surely look to try to shorten that.

But cap space will become an issue for Detroit. It’s unlikely Lamb will accept a 9.2 million dollar deal with the Pistons. He could potentially get a better long-term deal elsewhere. So can the Pistons get Lamb? Probably not. But the Pistons could only hope and offer Lamb a deal anyways.
