Frank Isola of The Athletic has reported that the Detroit Pistons have “emerged” as the favorites to sign Derrick Rose once free agency opens.

Point guard has become the most covered topic on this site for the Detroit Pistons, hasn’t it?

Well, sorry, but we have even more point guard news to cover.

Frank Isola for The Athletic has reported that the Detroit Pistons have “emerged” as the favorites to sign former league MVP Derrick Rose.

The Pistons have been linked to backup point guards since their season was ended by the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round of these past playoffs. Rose had also been linked to Detroit in an article by Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press earlier this summer.

Rose just finished having his best season, arguably, since 2012. Rose averaged 27 minutes off the bench for the Minnesota Timberwolves this past season, putting up averages of 18.0 points, 4.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds, while shooting 47 percent from the field and a career-high 37 percent from deep.

That’s good for a true shooting percentage of 55.7 percent, which was also a career-high.

Rose signed for the vet minimum last season with the Timberwolves after a strong showing in the playoffs for them against the Houston Rockets. No one expected Rose to outplay his contract like he did this past season.

In other words, he will not be signing for the vet minimum again. My guess would be Rose signs a contract worth anywhere between 6-10 million dollars. The Pistons sound like they know this and are open to offering him his worth once the free agency period opens up.

It also makes sense why Rose would want to sign in Detroit. The Pistons need an upgrade at backup point guard with Ish Smith likely departing and Rose was in the lead for Sixth Man of the Year until injuries derailed him near the All-Star break last season.

Rose is also from Chicago and is a family man who just welcomed a new child into the world. Detroit being right next to Chicago, it probably is going to be a major factor if he indeed signs here in free agency.

Rose would immediately help the Detroit Pistons and attack a major need on this team: bench scoring. Outside of Luke Kennard, there was no steady bench play by any other player this past season for Detroit.

A tandem of Rose and Kennard off the bench would blitz teams offensively.
