Bruce Brown became only the second player in Las Vegas Summer League history to record a triple-double, leading Detroit Pistons to a 4-0 record.
Heading into the Detroit Pistons Summer League many were looking forward to seeing first-round pick Sekou Doumbouya in action.
While we haven’t been able to see Doumbouya due to a sore right hamstring, we have been able to see the dominant play from another Piston player.
Bruce Brown Jr.
The talk of Piston fans and observers was the improvement of Brown’s shot. Last year, Brown was left completely open while defenders swarmed Blake Griffin when Griffin had the ball in his hands.
Brown had talked about working on his shot all summer and was looking forward to showing off its improvement in Summer League. Sadly, the jump shot still isn’t falling for Brown, as he is shooting only 20 percent from deep through the Pistons through four games.
If someone was told Brown was shooting 20 percent from deep in the Summer League before it started, they’d probably assume Brown hasn’t played well at all.
Instead, Brown could end up winning the MVP of the Las Vegas Summer League.
The Detroit Pistons and Brown informed the public days before the first Summer League game that Brown would be running point guard for the team throughout the summer games. Brown had shown flashes of his court vision and playmaking ability in his rookie season, and head coach Dwane Casey said early in the season that he saw point guard in his future.
Given the chance now in the summer, Brown has absolutely seized the opportunity and has dominated Summer League competition.
Brown has set up his teammates with ease, driving to the basket and forcing the defense to suck in, creating wide-open three-point attempts for his teammates. He’s also shown off an improved finishing ability, above the rim, through contact

And in the Pistons latest victory, Bruce Brown messed around and got a triple-double. Brown finished the Pistons win over the Philadelphia 76ers with 11 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Brown really has been quite impressive this summer. You look to see the NBA players show just how much better they are than everyone else in Las Vegas and Brown has certainly done that, along with showing his improved point guard skills.
The Detroit Pistons are 4-0 in the Summer League and it is due in large part to Brown’s incredible play. Through four games, Brown is averaging 13.5 points, 8.2 assists, and 8.0 rebounds a game.
In his first time playing point guard full-time, his assist-to-turnover ratio is something to marvel at. So far in this Summer League, Brown is averaging 8.2 assists with only 2.2 turnovers per game.
While we’re unlikely to see Brown at point guard during the season with Reggie Jackson and the signing of Derrick Rose. However, maybe if there was an injury to one of the two, we could see Brown fill in at that spot.
Also, Casey loves having playmakers on the floor. We’re not going to see the ball in Brown’s hand many times in an offense with Griffin and Jackson, it’s good to know Brown is capable of creating a good shot for the offense if forced to.
The former second-round pick is making rounds at Las Vegas. Seeing the progress already in Brown’s game bolds well for his and the Detroit Pistons future.
