This was a statement season for the Pistons. It was their second season under head coach Stan Van Gundy, their first full season without former Piston Josh Smith, and their first season moving on from the twin towers experiment electing to make Andre Drummond the sole franchise big man over Greg Monroe.

It was also Stan Van Gundy’s first time making a first-round selection. He got to make a draft selection last year however we only had a second round pick. This would be the first player drafted to add to the core of the Detroit Pistons squad that Van Gundy envisioned. With that pick, the Pistons selected Stanley Johnson.

Johnson struggled with his offense but showed great effort and defense which was highlighted in the playoffs when Johnson refused to back down against Miami Heat’s Lebron James. It truly looked like Johnson was destined to do great things in the motor city and become an absolute stud on the team for years to come (sigh).

Reggie Jackson performed masterfully for the Pistons in his first full season with the team leading them to their first playoff appearance in the last seven seasons. Despite the first round sweep that the series ended in, all the games were down to the wire and the Pistons competed against the eventual NBA champs, the Cleveland Cavaliers. It looked like this team had great potential and was trending upwards!
