Summer League Standouts

Much like 2017 when Eric Moreland earned the backup center job after a strong summer, the Pistons could go in that direction again, giving one of their summer guys an opportunity for a roster spot and a chance to be in the rotation.

Moreland jumped Boban Marjanovic to earn a spot in the rotation, mostly due to his defense, energy, and passing ability. If the Pistons prefer an athletic and young big behind Drummond, one option could be Donta Hall.

Hall, 22, played four seasons for Alabama. He looked very raw and limited on the offensive end during summer league but thrived on the defensive end. The two time All-SEC Defender was still able to rebound and block shots at a high level, despite being only 6-foot-9.

Another young option could be Matt Costello, the former Michigan State Spartan. After playing a season in the NBA G-League, Costello showed out during his Pistons summer league tenure, averaging 13.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Costello even showed some range from three, and established good chemistry with Bruce Brown, a player that is sure to be a part of the Pistons rotation this season.

Costello still had trouble with his fouls, which could be concerning when he’s playing with NBA level players. On the offensive end, Costello looked confident and comfortable, especially rolling to the basket and finishing around the rim.

The Pistons could decide their backup center is available through free agency or by making a trade. Or perhaps, their backup center of 2019 is already on the roster.
