Detroit Pistons: Pros and cons of signing Derrick Rose
Pro: Veteran Leadership and Mentality
Last season’s resurgence revealed a player exuding grit, determination, and focus. Rose’s ability to remain effective after multiple serious injuries throughout his career, including a torn ACL and torn meniscus, is impressive. His mentality throughout his injury-plagued career, from his reign as MVP to his relegation to backup, has been equally, if not more, impressive. How has Rose sustained effectiveness and production on the court through it all?
As he eloquently stated after his 50-point outburst, “I work my a** off.”
“I am just rolling with the punches…I know the hard work I put into everything…I am taking the role of being a leader to these young guys, being an example and maintaining my happiness.”
In an October 3rd, 2018 interview with The Undefeated’s Marc Spears, Rose discussed his newfound approach to the game, “I am just rolling with the punches…I know the hard work I put into everything…I am taking the role of being a leader to these young guys, being an example and maintaining my happiness.”
This is exactly the sort of mindset Detroit should demand from its veteran players, especially as an organization with so much youth and inexperience.
His work ethic and mentality will undoubtedly provide the sort of veteran leadership needed to command a bench comprised of young players such as Luke Kennard, Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, Sekou Doumbouya, Thon Maker, and others. Should this veteran mentality resonate with the Pistons’ young core, his signing will prove all-the-more valuable.
