Detroit Pistons: Pros and cons of signing Derrick Rose
Pro: Team-Friendly Contract
If Rose ends up disappointing during his tenure in Detroit, or if injuries render him ineffective, it will cost the Pistons very little financially.
His two-year, $15 million contract is a bargain given his production last season and allows Detroit to retain flexibility heading into the much-anticipated 2021 off-season. Additionally, if Rose proves to be a true upgrade over Smith, then his contract will be of even greater value, given that he is slotted to make only slightly over $1 million more per year than Smith.
While there is certainly risk involved with signing an injury-plagued veteran like Rose, the Pistons were able to mitigate the likelihood of future ramifications by bringing him in on an incredibly team-friendly deal.
If the Derrick Rose experiment fails in Detroit, it won’t affect the franchise long-term.
