The next step

Brown played a legitimate role on a playoff team during his rookie season. Even though much of this was due to Detroit’s lack of depth, it is important to note nonetheless.

Rarely can a second round draft pick immediately contribute to a playoff-caliber team, and while Brown struggled immensely at times, he also found ways to add positive production, specifically on the defensive end.

More from PistonPowered

Brown is still incredibly raw but possesses the physical intangibles and high defensive IQ that gives him a healthy upside as a prospect. It will take time to find an offensive game that suits him, whether it be as a shooting guard or a point guard, but as long as he is healthy he will be able to serve as one of Detroit’s top defenders.

Entering only his second year in the league, it is unfair to consider this a “make-or-break” season for Brown. His performance this upcoming season, however, will give the front office and the coaching staff a better idea of where he fits in Detroit moving forward, either as a small rotation piece, a bona fide starter, or somewhere in-between.

Pistons fans should not expect Brown to evolve into an All-Star, or anything close to that,  overnight. As long as he shows growth and improvement across the board and continues to play solid defense, Bruce Brown will be a valuable of Detroit’s roster moving forward.

This week the player preview series will continue with Tim Frazier, Jordan Bone and Rose. The first season preview debuted on Monday featuring starting point guard Reggie Jackson.
