Setting Bone’s 2019-20 expectations

It seems difficult to project playing time for Bone with the likes of Reggie Jackson, Derrick Rose and Tim Frazier ahead of him. Bruce Brown also had a strong showing while playing point guard for the Pistons during the NBA Summer League.

Bone’s a perfect fit for a two-point guard lineup if Dwane Casey elects to utilize this more, as he did with the Toronto Raptors. Bone’s ability to play off the ball, as he did at times at Tennessee, is what makes him a solid candidate to do so.

During an 18-point Summer League performance against the Brooklyn Nets, Bone utilized his speed to get to the spots on the floor he wanted to shoot from. At 6-foot-3, he has the ability and confidence to rise over the defender and knock down a pull-up jumper.

Despite spending a quality amount of time off the ball, he looked comfortable with the ball in his hands and working off the bounce. He also showed a willingness to drive into taller defenders and get to the free throw line.

That’s a good sign for Bone, though he’ll need to get stronger to convert more opportunities in close. His quickness will help him adjust immediately to the fast pace of the NBA.

With it being a possibility that the Pistons trade Jackson, Bone could be thrust into action at any point during the season.

His best fit is with Griffin off the court, since Bone isn’t proven to space the floor yet. He’ll also need those around him to space the floor, namely Luke Kennard and possibly running Tony Snell and Christian Wood as well. Ideally, if it’s a small-ball lineup, a quality roll man such as Markieff Morris or Andre Drummond fit in as well to best utilize Bone’s speed in a half-court setting.
