Setting Mykhailiuk’s 2019-20 expectations

It’s reasonable to see Mykhailiuk getting more playing time during the 2019-20 season, especially early on. The Pistons acquired him in the chase for a playoff spot and there wasn’t much time to experiment and allow Mykhailiuk to make mistakes as he learned a new system. His first training camp in Detroit and learning Dwane Casey’s system is going to be important for him to take the next step.

It’s evident that the Pistons are trying to address last season’s 3-point shooting woes. That is why Mykhailiuk is an asset in Detroit and could see an increase in playing time.

He was a career 40.9 percent 3-point shooter in his four-year career at Kansas. That includes a 15-for-52 (28.6 percent) spell in 26 games as a freshman.

As he continues to get stronger and fill out his frame, adjusting to the NBA pace and range will help his 3-point efficiency. It was also help him out on the defensive end.

His role could be as large as getting around 10 minutes per game, some decent run, but that seems ambitious unless there are some injuries the Pistons are battling through. One spot where he could thrive is in late-game situations to try and shoot the Pistons back into a game, or if Detroit is within five and needs to make up ground in the final minute.

Mykhailiuk’s best asset is his 3-point shooting and highlighting that while minimizing defensive woes late in games seems ideal. Spacing the floor offensively with Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard, Blake Griffin and Tony Snell could be a strong offensive lineup if Detroit needs a quick 3-pointer.
