Detroit Pistons 2019-20 preview: Khyri Thomas’ profile
Reviewing Thomas’ 2018-2019 Season
Thomas did not get many opportunities to play in his rookie season. He was mainly a bench warmer for the Pistons as he only appeared in 26 games for an average of 7.5 minutes per game. Due to this lack of consistent playing time, Thomas put up unimpressive season averages as one would expect. He averaged 2.3 points, 0.8 rebounds, 0.3 assists per game while shooting 32 percent from the field and 29 percent from 3-point range.
The Pistons were even more log-jammed at the shooting guard position in the 2018-19 season than they will be for the upcoming season. With Brown, Galloway, Kennard, Reggie Bullock, and Wayne Ellington all on the roster at some point for the Pistons, there was unfortunately no wiggle room for Thomas to play.
Many players would have let this discourage them but Thomas did not. Thomas stayed hungry and showed out during his time with the Grand Rapids Drive, looking to improve his game. Thomas played 10 games with the Grand Rapids Drive and put up big scoring numbers on numerous occasions, scoring 32, 25, 24 and 22 points.
In the 10 games that Thomas played in the G-League he averaged 20.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting an incredibly efficient 50 percent from the field and 46 percent from 3-point range. Obviously these are G-League statistics so this is not what to expect from Thomas if he were to have received more playing time with the Pistons, but the players that belong in the NBA will show out against the competition in the G-League and that’s exactly what Thomas did.
