The Detroit Pistons just don’t need Carmelo Anthony

You could argue they don’t even need Beasley. With the Pistons selection of Sekou Doumbouya in the 2019 NBA Draft, they hope to give him respectable minutes in order to better develop him for the future. Anthony would get in the way of that.

Knowing Carmelo, he would want respectable minutes too. That’s why he’s working hard to make a comeback. But that would take away valuable playing time from Doumbouya for most of the season, which would be hurtful to his development.

Beasley is being signed to be an offensive punch off the bench and a mentor to help Doumbouya adjust to the league. And he knows that.

Final Thoughts

I acknowledge that the idea of Carmelo Anthony to the Pistons is cool. He was a star in the league, he’s a big name, and he would certainly bring more fans to the arena.

But it doesn’t always work out to bring in big-name players looking for another chance in the league (Allen Iverson, Tracy McGrady, and Chris Webber come to mind).

The team is set for the 2019-20 season, and I just don’t see a need or a fit for a 35-year-old Carmelo Anthony on the Detroit Pistons. There is no guarantee his offense will still be there and he is a liability on defense.

If we wanted him at his best, we should have drafted him in 2003.
