Pistons sign Michael Beasley

It’s not often that you have the top two picks of a draft on your roster but pairing Beasley (No. 2) with Rose (No. 1), the Pistons have done just that from the 2008 draft class.

Eleven years later and the Beasley finds himself fighting for a roster spot, presumably against Wood, after signing a one-year, non-guaranteed contract in Detroit. Like Wood, Beasley’s contract guarantees on the first game of the regular season.

Beasley, 30, is still a wildly-efficient scorer. He missed most of last season for off-the-court issues but dating back to the two seasons prior, Beasley shot better than 50 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from the 3-point line.

He would be another offensive weapon for Detroit, once he serves his five-game suspension. Though he fits better as a small forward or power forward than he does at center. But the Pistons will need an extra wing with Doumbouya likely to see little playing time.

That’s why it’s feasible for both Beasley and Wood to make the roster. Again, it’s another low-risk, high-reward signing.

GRADE: A-

Credit is due to the Pistons front office for doing so much with so little room to work with. Pulling in Rose and Morris instantly improved the rotation.

Now, the Pistons can add to the frontcourt with Beasley and Wood on non-guaranteed deals. Both would impact the team in different ways. If Detroit were to keep the duo, they’d have to make an accommodating roster move to before the regular season starts since keeping both would bring them to 16 on the active roster, excluding the two, two-way contracts.
