Reviewing Maker’s 2018-19 season
This past season with the Pistons was the fresh start Maker needed, seeing a career high in minutes, and playing in the back up center spot behind Drummond, Maker impressed immediately. He also showed that he had what it took to be a “Bad Boy”, bringing the hustle, drive and hardworking attitude to Detroit’s bench from day one.
Casey fell in love with the young big man, giving Maker the opportunity he deserved, which saw Maker getting more minutes, notching 19.4 minutes per game, in the 29 games with Detroit after the trade. Maker also averaged a career high in points, posting 5.5 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
Maker had flashes of that potential that led to him being a lottery pick, whether it was a chase down block, hitting a game-winning three or stretching the floor with his impressive touch.
He had a statement play against the Washington Wizards in his very first game as a Piston on Feb. 11th. 2019, where he lost his tooth after an emphatic block on Bobby Portis, even recovering after the initial block to challenge the follow up. Maker showed a toughness and fearlessness that many players don’t have.
Although Maker is a 7-footer, he takes a lot of three’s, despite shooting only 30 percent from behind the arc last year, he displays a lot of confidence and shows the promise to become an improved stretch big in today’s changing game.
This past season, in a game against the Indiana Pacers, Maker notched four 3-pointers in a game, along with 14 points and four timely blocks, all while playing a career high 41 minutes.
