Detroit Pistons: 3 players who are key to success in 2019-20
By Tyler Lucas
Luke Kennard, Wing
Luke Kennard certainly is a polarizing player for Pistons Fans, isn’t he? Some think of him as our promising young prospect who can shoot from the outside or take a defender off the dribble, or pass and be a play-maker as well. Others? Well others just think of him as the guy that the Pistons front office passed on Donovan Mitchell for in the 2017 NBA Draft.
Whether you love him or hate him, he is clearly a big part of the Pistons plans going forward, and a really solid young player at that.

Kennard was a steady contributor to the team as a rookie, and even saw his scoring numbers go up from year one to year two. Kennard saw his points go up from 7.6 per game his rookie year, to 9.7 last season, and his shot volume went up as well, indicating more use within the offense.
As a guy who has the ability to shoot from the outside with efficiency and handle the ball cleanly as well when he has it (less than one turnover a game in his career), Kennard is someone who could be of tremendous help to the Pistons stars should he improve in some key areas.
Kennard has been, well, adequate, on the defensive end. There are moments where he struggles to guard wings with size and speed, and that is something that he could stand to improve coming into this year. With more time in the NBA and more experience defending stronger, faster players, we could see Kennard take a modest jump defensively, and at least hold his own on most nights.
As far as his scoring goes, he has the talent and the potential to be a solid, consistent scoring threat for the team. As we see him add more to his offensive skill set, and become more comfortable playing his game in this league, we should see his scoring numbers exceed well past what he has put up already. If the Pistons are going to see success as a team and make the jump to being a threat in the Eastern Conference, they will need Luke Kennard to do just that.
