Detroit Pistons big man Andre Drummond is entering the final year of his five-year, $130 million contract. Look for a big season from the 26 year old.

If Andre Drummond chooses to decline his player option for the 2020-21 season, the Detroit Pistons’ front office will have an important decision to make.

The franchise’s phenom center is set to hit free agency at this season’s end unless he accepts his player option, and it is likely that he will command a max contract on the open market.

Should he opt for free agency, Ed Stefanski and Co. will have to determine whether his talents are worth the price. For the first time in years, the Pistons will regain some financial flexibility next off season and could choose to spend the money elsewhere.

But with a relatively weak incoming free agent class, Detroit may be better suited pursuing a new deal with Drummond – assuming he would be interested in re-signing. If Drummond is motivated to play for a contender, Detroit’s success this upcoming season will be key.

Regardless of how well the Pistons perform collectively, expect a big year from Drummond. Players in contract years are known for being motivated to perform better as they pursue a more lucrative deal.

Drummond will undoubtedly be looking to prove his worth to the league this upcoming season. If he has a career year, it will only make the front office’s decision more difficult.

This is the 18th installment of Piston Powered’s preview series that looks at each player on Detroit’s roster throughout the month of August.

Let’s discuss Drummond’s performance during the 2018-19 season and what fans should expect moving forward.
