2019 Draft

Round 1 Pick 15: Sekou Doumbouya

The Pistons were elated when at the 15th pick, they ended up with Sekou Doumbouya or “this guy with bounce” as the number one overall pick of the draft Zion Williamson jokingly referred to him as.

Doumbouya was a guy who, on most mock drafts, was predicted to be taken in the top 10 range well before the Pistons had a crack at drafting him. Casey and the Pistons front office were shocked when Doumbouya slid as far as he did. In the Detroit News article Casey said “He kept dropping and we had Plan A in place and we didn’t expect him to be there. Then Plan B came into place and it was the best plan of all — because we had him ranked very high on the board. (Most of the team scouts) were there at the workout in Dallas and we thought we were wasting our time because we saw all the teams in front of us.”

Casey is referring to Doumbouya’s workout in Dallas where he hit 15 3-pointers in a row from various spots on the court in front of numerous NBA scouts that were slotted way ahead of the Pistons in the draft.

In a year where nearly every mock draft turned out to be comically wrong, the Pistons are singing their praises that Doumbouya fell into their lap at the 15th pick. Doumbouya is a player who at 6-foot-9 with his combination of size and mobility has a very high upside. He has drawn comparisons to both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Pascal Siakam. Comparing any player to Antetokounmpo is risky business as he is looking to be a generational talent at this point and the future of the NBA.

Siakam is a much more reasonable comparison and projection, although the fact that Doumbouya draws these star comparisons is very flattering and representative of the high potential he has. The Pistons hope they have drafted a key piece and one of their forwards of the future.

Round 2 Pick 37: Deividas Sirvydis (Acquired from Mavericks via trade)

Deividas Sirvydis is a player that many NBA teams were high on. The 19-year-old forward from Lithuania has prototypical length at 6-foot-8 to go along with his silky smooth shooting form. When he was drafted, Sirvydis was eager to come overseas and prove himself immediately for the franchise. As anticipated, Sirvydis was sent home back to Lithuania to work on his game and to return when he is more ready.

Pistons fans should not expect to see anything from Sirvydis for the next year or two at minimum. If he bulks up his frame and irons out the wrinkles in his game, the Pistons may have found themselves a gem in the second round.

Round 2 Pick 57:Jordan Bone (Acquired from Nuggets via trade)

We have all seen the heartwarming video of Jordan Bone‘s draft night that went viral.

Bone is trying to be remembered for more than just his viral draft night video. Coming out of Tennessee, Bone is a lightning quick guard who earned himself Second Team all-SEC honors his junior year before he declared for the NBA draft. Bone, who is on a two-way contract will likely spend much of his first season with the Grand Rapids Drive. If things pan out well Bone could be a legitimate backup point guard for the Pistons in the not too distant future.
