Breaking down potential Detroit Pistons rotations for 2019-20
What will the Detroit Pistons second unit look like?
Even if someone only watched a handful of games last season, it was obvious. The Detroit Pistons got killed in the first half of the season whenever the starters left the floor. Those second- and third-quarter collapses were happening far too often.
However, the aforementioned revamping of the team has provided Pistons fans with a new sense of optimism. So, when the starters hit the bench, here’s what Dwane Casey will likely roll out:
PG: Derrick Rose
SG: Luke Kennard
PF: Markieff Morris
Now this is where you’ll begin to see some disparities and some uproar from fans. Unfortunately, the likelihood of Sekou Doumbouya seeing any significant minutes, especially at the beginning of the season, is slim. The new rookie on the block has caught the eye of nearly every Detroit Pistons fan, but the team may be wise to limit his usage in his first season.
Luke Kennard has become a fan favorite, and him coming off of the bench may seem like a slight against him, but it isn’t. Kennard is arguably the best shot maker and creator in this second unit, whereas swapping him for Brown may stunt the production on the bench as their scoring may see a significant decrease.
Furthermore, let’s explore this gem discovered on Twitter.
Kennard shoots significantly better when Griffin is not on the floor. The disparity is so large, that it’s directly indicative of how the Detroit Pistons should utilize him this season.
Christian Wood may raise some eyebrows coming in at the backup center position. It’s an issue that the Detroit Pistons still have yet to directly address, as Wood can play multiple positions. However, if it comes down to Wood or Thon Maker, there’s just too much room for improvement to see Maker take that spot out the gate.
Derrick Rose is likely the favorite signing among the fans this summer, as the former MVP will inherit another backup position in Detroit. Though many have argued that Derrick should start over Reggie Jackson, or even argue that the team should start both, as it stands that will not happen.
