The Prospect

Sekou Doumbouya

If you look at the mid-market teams who are currently good, they all have one thing in common: they hit a home run in the draft. Utah and Milwaukee are the blueprint for success in Detroit, as they have drafted well, developed players and taken chances that paid off.

If Detroit wants to join them, they eventually must do the same, starting with Sekou Doumbouya. By all accounts he is a raw, athletic wing that many have compared to Pascal Siakam, Toronto’s breakout star from last year. Although Pistons fans would be ecstatic if Doumbouya ends up the next Siakam, the best-case scenario is that he is closer to another lanky foreigner with raw athletic ability, Giannis Antetokounmpo. This is a long shot, but no one expected the Greek Freak to turn into the best player in the NBA.

One of these years Detroit is going to choose correctly and nail a pick. Is Sekou the one?  Only time will tell. Realistically, getting regular rotation minutes so that he can develop would be great.

As one of the true youngsters in the draft, it is unlikely that Doumbouya makes an immediate impact, but the worst-case scenario is that he makes none at all and we spend the next few years marveling at what a great NBA body he has while watching him chuck up bricks. This is also known as the Stanley Johnson scenario.
