Cleveland’s offseason changes
The Cleveland Cavaliers had a relatively quiet offseason. Aside from the NBA Draft, the Cavs made minor moves.
Perhaps the biggest and most impactful move was hiring John Beilein away from the University of Michigan. Beilein was one of the top college coaches, reaching two Final Fours (2013 and 2016) with the Wolverines.
Beilein is one of the top developmental coaches in basketball and he’ll be tasked with developing a young core as Cleveland is in a period of transition.
Drafting Darius Garland fifth overall gives Cleveland a dynamic backcourt duo with Collin Sexton, one that Cavs fans hope can become the second coming of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. Beilein’s ability to develop them will play a factor in their ceiling.
But it also creates a logjam in the backcourt after Cleveland acquired Brandon Knight and Matthew Dellavadova last December. They also have Jordan Clarkson, giving them five guys that can lead the point or play two-guard.
Another “addition” could be a healthy Kevin Love. He played in just 22 games last season and hasn’t played more than 60 since the 2015-16 season.
