Detroit Pistons updated roster with Joe Johnson signing
Point guards
The Starter
Reggie Jackson – Guaranteed contract ($18.1 million)
Jackson has started all but two games since his arrival in Detroit. The 29-year-old guard played off the ball last season, resulting in a career-best 3-point shot at 36.9 percent. He was still an efficient passer and lowered his turnover rate to a career-best 11.4 percent.
He enters the final year of his contract, having played all 82 games last season for the first time in his career. Ideally he continues to improve his efficiency as he stays around 27 minutes per game, possibly a few less, with the newfound point guard depth.
Sixth Man
Derrick Rose – Guaranteed contract ($7.3 million)
Rose hasn’t played more than 66 games since tearing his Anterior Cruciate Ligament in 2011. He supposedly could have played the last half of the season with the Minnesota Timberwolves but the staff reached an agreement to allow him to rest and stay healthy with Minnesota out of playoff contention.
He shot a career-best 37 percent from 3-point range, which he’ll have to prove his sustainability this season. If he does, he has a legitimate case at Sixth Man of the Year given he plays a healthy amount of games.
The Reserve
Tim Frazier – Guaranteed contract ($1.8 million)
Like the aforementioned point guards, Frazier shot a career high from 3-point range last season, connecting on 36.6 percent of attempts. Frazier has struggled to find a long-term home with the Pistons being his sixth team entering his sixth NBA season.
The opportunity for Frazier to earn playing time is in Detroit. With Jackson and Rose having prior injury experience, Frazier could be thrust into an important role and become an x-factor in the Pistons’ playoff chances.
The Two-Way
Jordan Bone – two-way contract
Bone is an intriguing prospect. The 6-foot-3 rookie out of Tennessee will have an opportunity to see NBA action, as the two-way contract permits him to be on the active roster for 45 days. The majority of his time, however, will be spent in the Gatorade League.
Development will be Bone’s biggest key but he may spell the regulars if a particular load management night arises.
