Small Forwards

The Starter

Tony Snell – Guaranteed contract ($11.4 million)

Snell was acquired in a surprise trade that sent Jon Leuer to the Bucks, where Snell was initially a starter until last season. He started all 80 games in his first year and 59 of 75 in 2017-18. He’ll likely assume that role again in Detroit.

He’s a capable 3-and-D wing that can guard multiple positions. He’s hit 38.2 percent from 3-point range for his career and 40.3 percent over his last three seasons in Milwaukee.

The Reserve

Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk – Guaranteed contract ($1.4 million)

Mykhailiuk has the potential to be a promising player. Dwane Casey believes and the Pistons organization believes he could develop into a 6-foot-8 point guard. For now, he’s a talented shooter from college whose game is developing at the next level.

He hit 32.6 percent of 3-point attempts in his rookie season after shooting 40.9 percent from range at Kansas.

The Prospect

Sekou Doumbouya – Guaranteed contract ($3.3 million)

Doumbouya was selected 15th overall, a draft spot that has done well for other NBA players such as Kawhi Leonard. That’s one similarity between the two, though Casey compares Doumbouya to Pascal Siakam.

Expect Doumbouya to get some run this season but not have an integral role this season aside from development, unless he truly impresses the staff.

The Veteran

Joe Johnson – Partially-guaranteed contract

Johnson’s contract is partially guaranteed for $220,000 and will be given a longer leash than training camp, assuming he makes the roster. His value will fully guarantee at $2.4 million (veteran minimum) with a cap hit of $1.6 million if he’s on the roster on Jan. 7.

The MVP and champion of the Big3 returns for, potentially, his 18th NBA season.

The Two-Way

Louis King – Two-way contract

King appears to be more of a project but is a scorer with the ball in his hands. Once a top college prospect, King went undrafted in this year’s draft but could add value on the wing long-term if he progresses while in the Gatorade League.

That’s where he’ll spend most of his time but he does have up to 45 days on the active NBA roster under the two-way deal.

An unknown

Todd Withers – Exhibit 10 contract

Withers played 48 games for the Grand Rapids Drive last season, scoring 6.9 points and grabbing 5.5 rebounds per game. He’s a tweener between the two forward positions and will get a chance to compete in camp.

An Exhibit 10 contract is a minimum contract with a training camp invitation that could be turned into a two-way contract, though the Pistons have two already, or optioned back to Grand Rapids.
