Detroit Pistons updated roster with Joe Johnson signing
Power Forwards
The Star
Blake Griffin – Guaranteed contract ($34.2 million)
Griffin is the all-everything Pistons star, coming off one of the best years of his career that landed him on the All-NBA Third Team. His health is going to be key in keeping the Pistons hopes of winning it all alive.
He averaged 24.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game last season, some gaudy numbers. Expect more of the same this season as the star looks to carry Detroit further this season.
Rotational Big
Markieff Morris – Guaranteed contract ($3.2 million)
Morris comes to Detroit on a buy-low contract after his shooting percentage dipped by six percent last season and his 3-point percentage dipped by three percent. Still, he’s a physical big that can bang in the paint and play some small-ball center.
If Morris takes a step towards his 2016-18 self it could pay dividends for the Pistons as the seventh or eighth man off the bench.
Leap year
Thon Maker – Guaranteed contract ($3.6 million)
For Maker, this season is going to be a “prove it” opportunity. He has a full offseason to work on his 3-point shot, among other things, and get fully acclimated to Casey’s system. He hasn’t been horrible defensively but his offensive output has made him nearly unplayable.
Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Maker needs to take a leap to earn his next deal.
An unkown
Donta Hall – Exhibit 10 contract
The 6-foot-9 undrafted rookie averaged 10.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in his senior season at Alabama. If he impresses in camp he could come away with a two-way contract.
An Exhibit 10 contract is a minimum contract with a training camp invitation that could be turned into a two-way contract, though the Pistons have two already, or optioned to Grand Rapids.
