3 takeaways from Detroit Pistons 115-91 loss to Orlando Magic
1. Keep Christian Wood
CAN WE please TALK ABOUT CHRISTIAN WOOD? I think that #PistonsTwitter made a unanimous decision during the first half that there will be many, many riots if the team doesn’t retain Wood for the regular season. After back-to-back dunks, Wood capped off his run with a 3-pointer of his own. He ended the first half with 12 points and four rebounds in seven first-half minutes.
Wood finished the game with a team-high 19 points in 16 minutes. He shot 6-of-10 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. He also included an attempted murder on Isaac Humphries. So he might be in prison soon but if not, he should totally be on the roster for the rest of eternity. Wood also had eight boards and one block.
It looks like it is going to come down to Wood and Joe Johnson for the final roster spot. Between their two performances, I don’t see how this isn’t a sign in favor of retaining Wood. Johnson played with, maybe, minimal effort?
Nothing that Iso Joe did gave me any indication that he’d still be with the team through the final cuts. Wood just looked to be the better player and his role on the roster fills a larger hole.
Wood, on the other hand, was drawing fouls and hustling to make plays. It might be because Johnson has done this time and time again, whereas Wood is fighting for his first real stab at a roster. And that difference shows.
After spending the majority of his career in the G-League, Wood hopes to make an official NBA roster by the time opening day is here. Wood is easily my favorite offseason move after signing Rose. There will be outrage, at least from me and many others, if he’s not on the roster on Oct. 23rd.
This is now the Christian Wood Fan Club powered by FanSided. I don’t make the rules.
