The Dallas Mavericks visit the Detroit Pistons for the second game of a back-to-back. Both teams look to learn more about themselves in their second games.

The Detroit Pistons did not shoot the ball well in their preseason opener. With more familiarity, they look to improve their shooting percentages while hosting the Dallas Mavericks, who arrived in Detroit around 2:30 a.m. after playing in Oklahoma City the night before.

Social poll

Before each game we’ll ask Pistons fans and beyond a question about what they’re looking for in that night’s game. For Wednesday’s game against the Mavericks, the focus shifts on who fans can learn the most from with a strong showing.

After Christian Wood shined in Monday’s loss, it left Thon Maker and Joe Johnson looking like odd men out. Though Johnson’s best value can’t be quantified on the court as an 18-year veteran.

What to expect

Luka Doncic, the reigning Rookie of the Year did not play on Tuesday in Oklahoma City so he could get a fair amount of minutes. This is the first opportunity for Pistons fans to see Doncic live, unless they saw him in Dallas. Doncic sat out last year’s trip to Detroit and the Pistons “home” game in the series this year will be played in Mexico City.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle already ruled out J.J. Barea and forward Dwight Powell, according to Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News. That leaves the Mavericks thin at center as well, which could lead to a big night for Markieff Morris and Wood.

In addition to Doncic sitting out on Tuesday, so did Kristaps Porzingis. Porzingis was listed as probable prior to the game but eventually ruled out as he rested. He will likely make his Mavericks debut in the Motor City. It will be his first game since tearing his Anterior Cruciate Ligament on Feb. 6, 2018. It’s likely Doncic and Porzingis play, the Dallas Morning News’ Brad Townsend reported.

Though the Pistons will continue to monitor Blake Griffin‘s workload early on, the Griffin-Porzingis matchup will be intriguing. How Derrick Rose and Luke Kennard share the floor together against Dallas’ second unit is another storyline to watch as they take turns sharing ball-handling responsibilities.
