Keeping Wood

One of the greatest rewards in your longstanding career is calling Christian Wood into your office and seeing his electric smile light up the room as you inform him he’s made the final roster.

He earned it. He scored 66 points on 40 shots with a shooting line of .550/.400/.833. In only 17 minutes per game, he scored 13.2 points and grabbed 7.2 rebounds per game, which is the offensive production needed in limited spurts off the bench in the frontcourt. The hope is he’ll improve on the defensive end.

The Pistons organization has strong ties to Joe Johnson and, while his on-court performance was less-than-exciting, his greatest attribute can’t be quantified by any analytics. He brings 17 years of NBA experience to the Henry Ford Pistons Performance Center, almost as a glorified coach, to help a young team blossom.

The difficulty in cutting him is the loyalty and integrity that is the basis of your career. You’ve built a rapport with your peers, who have the same loyalty and rapport with Johnson. Is his off-the-court presence better than someone with a guaranteed contract?

It’s a tough decision.
