Detroit Pistons 4 top prospects with the Grand Rapids Drive
By Eli Bashi
2. Jordan Bone
So far in his young career, Bone has looked like a man among boys in the G League. His athleticism is borderline breathtaking and it’s just insane that he almost went undrafted. He has a 42.5-inch max vertical, and was recorded as the fastest player in the 2019 NBA Draft Combine. So yeah, he’s somewhat athletic.
Bone has by far been the Drive’s best player this year and almost makes his G League competition look silly. He can get to the rim and finish whenever he wants. His 3-point shot looks fantastic, as he’s shooting 40% from three on a hefty 6.1 attempts per game. He leads the drive in points per game at 18.2 and is also fifth in the entire G League in assists per game at 8. He has a fantastic pull-up jumper in the pick-and-roll and is exceptional at finding the open man.
Defensively, Bone is just as advertised. He can stay in front of his man with that fantastic quickness, and for the most part can hold his own. He has a lot to learn on that end of the floor, as do most rookies, but his intangibles are hard to find. He can survive on defense based on athleticism alone, and once he starts reading plays better, gets a little stronger physically, and the game starts to slow down, he has the potential to be a deadly lock-down defender. His 6-3 height and wingspan provide a fantastic base for him to guard point guards with similar size.
Recently, Bone suffered an ankle injury and has missed a few games. Though, it doesn’t seem like something that will keep him sidelined for an extended period of time.
I expect that if the Pistons season doesn’t go quite how they want it to, and they ship off one of their point guards, Bone could be a guy you see slide into the unit at that spot. He’s quick, he can jump out the roof, he can shoot the three at a high level, and he can create for others. That’s exactly what you need these days from an NBA level point guard. He’s a baller, and for the Drive, he’s been exactly who they needed at the helm to help lead their young team.
