15. Washington Wizards – Bruce Brown

(Original Pick – Troy Brown Jr.)

Here it is! Bruce Brown was the pick here for the Wizards despite the established backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal. Brown’s evolution as a point guard gives him a role on most teams, but he can still have an impact on the court when he’s not the primary ball handler, like when Derrick Rose shares the court with him.

Other players in consideration here included Jalen Brunson (pick 33) from the Dallas Mavericks, and Kendrick Nunn (undrafted) of the Miami Heat. I passed on Brunson for Brown because I believe Brown has higher upside, especially if he can establish a reliable jump shot. Brunson has been solid, and will likely have a role as a backup point guard for years to come.

Nunn was passed on (but the entire NBA) for his murky legal issues in college while at Illinois. You can read about them here.

Brown has shown an improved ability to get to the rim this year, something he struggled with throughout his rookie season, even though his athleticism was undeniable. His improvements weren’t the linear ones that you can just expect a second year guard to make, and they aren’t just an uptick in stats due to playing more minutes.

He will continue to work on improving areas he struggles with in his game, and the Pistons certainly got a steal with pick 42 in the 2018 NBA Draft.
