The Detroit Pistons remain fortunate to have the services of Derrick Rose, who just set a new franchise record.
Following the Detroit Pistons victory over the Boston Celtics, Derrick Rose quietly set a new franchise record. After scoring 22 points on 84 percent shooting, Rose became the first player in Pistons’ history to record seven consecutive 20+ point games as a reserve. The previous record was held by Jerry Stackhouse (1998-1999). This is currently the second franchise record that Rose holds in Detroit, the first being the most points averaged per game as a reserve.
The latter could technically be subject to change but with the tear that he’s currently on that doesn’t seem entirely likely. Through his last seven games Rose is averaging 23.7 points per game to go along with 5.7 assists on 53.5 percent shooting from the field.
He’s preforming at an All-Star level this season, and fans have taken notice. It’s more or less on a nightly basis that the heroics of Rose are the only things that keep Detroit in the game, and there have even been a few instances this season where he puts up the game-winning shot.
The way that the Pistons have been able to effectively utilize pick and rolls have been a large reason that Rose has seen the success he has been lately. Andre Drummond is a solid screener which allows Rose to glide to the basket with relative ease. He’s been incredible at creating looks for himself off the dribble, and has (for the most part) been exceptional in isolation, something that coach Dwane Casey has opted to do frequently this season.
The resurgence of Rose’s career has been an absolute joy to witness, and not just from Pistons fans but from fans around the league. The way he’s been able to bounce back from multiple devastating injuries and change his game just enough that he’s able to preserve his body while playing nearly the same way has been remarkable. The explosion is still there, but it’s controlled chaos, he’s done a great job controlling his body while in the air.
His most recent scoring stretch will likely put him higher on team’s trade list. Although it seems unlikely that Detroit will part ways with him, it always remains a possibility. Rose is currently a hot commodity in the NBA.
Whatever his future holds, Pistons fans will always have a soft spot in their heart for what he’s been able to do for them. Congratulations to Derrick Rose!
