Detroit Pistons history: Where are the pieces from the Blake Griffin trade now?
It’s officially been two years since the Detroit Pistons acquired the All-Star forward from the Clippers. Where are all the involved pieces now?
Two years after the “Woj bomb” that sent fans of the Detroit Pistons into a frenzy, how do you feel about it now? On a personal note, I’ll never forget where I was when this news broke. The reality that Detroit was finally getting a star felt incredible.
The Pistons shipped Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, Boban Marjanovic, their 2018 first round pick and their 2019 second round pick to the Clippers for Blake Griffin, Willie Reed and Brice Johnson.
Where are all those pieces now?
Filler and draft picks
Willie Reed only suited up for Detroit in three games, but has never seen a minute of NBA action since. He’s currently playing for Utah’s G-League affiliate in Salt Lake City. Brice Johnson was waived by the Pistons, and is currently playing basketball overseas in France
As for the Pistons first round pick that was included in the deal, the Clippers wound up selecting Miles Bridges, a native of Flint, Michigan who attended Michigan State. They traded him on draft night to Charlotte for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Gilgeous-Alexander was later involved in the trade that sent Paul George to LA. This season for Oklahoma City, Gilgeous-Alexander is a legitimate candidate for the Most Improved Player award.
Boban Marjanovic
Boban wasn’t just a fan favorite in Detroit, he’s a fan favorite across the league. Everybody loves him. In the five seasons he’s played in the NBA, he’s already played for five different franchises. He’s seldom going to play significant minutes, but he’s always there if you need him.
The 7’4″ center appeared in 56 games for the Clippers (started in 9 of them) before being included in the trade to Philadelphia alongside Harris. In 22 games for the Sixers he averaged 8.2 points per game on 62.5 percent shooting, which are both career highs.
Over the summer after his contract expired, he landed in Dallas. He was the Mavericks third option at center before Dwight Powell recently suffered a season ending injury. Boban will likely begin to play clutch minutes for Dallas as they continue their playoff push.
