Toppin’s fit with Detroit

As mentioned in the first slide, the Pistons are very clearly cruising down rebuild road. Head Coach Dwane Casey is very good at developing players when they are young.

Throughout his career with the Toronto Raptors, Casey had helped in the development of All-Star caliber players like DeMar DeRozan, Pascal Siakam and much of the core of the 2019 NBA Champions.

Casey will be doing the same with Sekou Doumbouya as he matures into an everyday contributor for the Pistons. Luke Kennard started to show signs of major improvement over the year before getting hurt, and Christian Wood is starting to look like a long-term solution to the Andre Drummond vacancy.

With all things being considered, he could be a good fit for the Pistons, but he may not be the best fit from this year’s draft pool. Toppin’s offensive ability is unique for this year’s draft class, but his age may not fit the long term road for the Pistons.

Yes, his maturity could be great for the Pistons since he will be older and more developed upon his hypothetical arrival. However, Sekou may need at least one more year to build on his game before he is a legitimate threat on the team.

If the Pistons do in fact draft Toppin, Pistons fans should be excited upon the arrival of a player with his set of skills, but he may be better on a team that has the pieces to win in the next year or two.

At the end of the day, regardless of where he goes and who he is playing for, Obi Toppin is a prospect everyone should be watching, especially with March Madness around the corner.
