Detroit Pistons: 2020 NBA first round mock draft 1.0
The Cavs have put themselves in a rough position. Drafting another guard means adding to the already crowded back court that they’ve created for themselves.
In the last two years, Cleveland has spent two top-ten picks on ball dominant point guards who are too often stagnant on offense. Admittedly, Collin Sexton was playing the best basketball we’ve seen from him leading up to the NBA’s hiatus.
However, before that both he and Darius Garland had been too limited in their scoring ability. The Cavs don’t have too many shot creators as it is, and Anthony Edwards would be their best option.
If anyone is going to be considered the top pick in the draft, it’d likely be him. His dominance this season at Georgia went unmatched. He was named the SEC’s Rookie of the Year, along with earning a spot on the All-SEC team.
His three-point shooting is a slightly too high-volume given the irregularity that he hits them at, shooting just 29.4 percent on 7.7 attempts per game.
In his three most recent games, he’s made just 3 of his last 25 attempts.
Regardless, his shot creating ability is needed on a Cavs team that desperately needs a scoring punch.
Defensively is where he has a lot of opportunity to grow. He’s constantly going under screens, allowing his opponent to get off a shot that Edwards can’t close out on in time.
His sheer quickness could turn him into an elite defender, he just needs the right coaching.
