Detroit Pistons 2019-2020 player grade: Sekou Doumbouya
What Sekou didn’t do so well
The very thing that Pistons’ fans were worried about is what eventually became the thing that hurt Sekou in his rookie year. The lack of scoring chances.
He should be used away from the ball. That’s where he’s most effective. However, there’s a difference between utilizing him off the ball and still having him involved in the action, and using him in the way that he was to close out the season.
He was relegated into a role where he essentially stands in the corner and if the ball comes to him, he’s almost forced into making a play because he’s otherwise not going to have a chance to score.

These forced attempts led to him getting blocked at the rim on nearly a dozen occasions, air balling three-point shots, or turning the ball over.
His ball handling and his court vision were severely lacking. He never recorded more than 3 assists in a game this season, and he only recorded 3 once.
Sekou’s three-point shot was never his saving grace, but it was always a reliable facet of his game. After those initial eight games however, it completely dropped off. In his final 23 games of the season, he shot just 24.2 percent from three.
His defensive effort didn’t appear to be as sharp as it was before, and because if this he saw his minutes go down. All this did was give him fewer quality looks at the basket and decrease his potential impact.
However, even when Sekou did get a good look from anywhere on the floor he was seldom able to capitalize. He hit a downward slope after those initial two weeks and wasn’t able to recover.
