Bleacher Report predicted that the Detroit Pistons could come away with one of the biggest steals in free agency this summer.

In a recent article written by Bleacher Report, they predicted the nine biggest steals in free agency this summer. In it, the Detroit Pistons were listed as a team that could potentially sign Harry Giles.

"“He’d be a great pick-up for a team like the Pistons or Spurs that lacks salary cap space and needs to take personnel gambles in order to create excitement for the future.”"

They’re absolutely right, and this is something we’ve talked about here as well. We dove into this more extensively last month, and you can check that out here.

The Pistons are expected to have around $40 million in cap space, though that’s subject to change as it’s currently unknown how the league’s suspension will impact the salary cap. Whether it’s short term or long term, it could likely take a hit somehow.

Giles makes complete sense for the Pistons.

There are a multitude of reasons as to why the Sacramento Kings declined his team option for the 2020-2021 season, but one of the major ones came down to finances. The Kings have so many players that they’re going to have to pay over the next several years.

They’re going to be flirting with the tax line for the better part of a decade between paying Buddy Hield, De’Aaron FoxBogdan Bogdanović, and eventually Marvin Bagley.

So, with several other factors involved Sacramento decided to make a difficult decision, and it was one that was met with anger and disappointment from the fans.

This season he was part of their frontcourt contingency plan in the absence of Bagley, and if he were to end up with the Pistons he’d be part of a new contingency plan.

The difference is that with the Pistons, he’d have a significantly more involved role on both ends of the floor. Injuries have slowed down the progression of his career, but when he’s healthy, he’s a force.

Giles is a crowd energizer and can be a fierce rim protector. He still has plenty of work to do with his overall consistency, especially as a scorer, but all it takes is the right opportunity.

Detroit gave Christian Wood a chance, and it paid off. They could do the same for Giles who would likely begin as a sixth man, and potentially work his way into the starting lineup.

The Pistons will likely look to select a point guard in the upcoming NBA Draft, and will need to fill a few holes in their frontcourt. Both John Henson and Thon Maker may not return next season, so they’ll have to create more flexibility there.

Giles makes too much sense for Detroit. It just comes down to the price.
