The Detroit Pistons should re-sign Langston Galloway this summer
Re-signing Langston Galloway may not be at the top of the Detroit Pistons’ priorities this summer, but it still needs to be done.
Heading into the summer of 2020, whether the playoffs are happening into late August or things proceed as originally scheduled, the Detroit Pistons will have a long list of tasks to accomplish.
Re-signing some of their current players may not exactly be considered a top priority however. With the excess of cap space that their expected to have, they’ll have flexibility to construct the roster however they want.
Retaining Langston Galloway would allow the Pistons to continue the offensive philosophy that they’ve adopted under the reign of Dwane Casey.
While any “3 & D” player could theoretically fill the void that he’d leave behind, it’s marginally wiser to roll out a player on opening night who’s familiar with the play calls and his teammates. Ball handlers know his tendencies better than they would with a new face.
This past season he averaged 10.3 points per game on .435/.399/.859 shooting splits. He’s one of the deadliest and most efficient catch and shoot players in the entire league.
Galloway has struggled with consistency ever since he first signed with the Pistons in 2017. However, he remains one of their most reliable perimeter options.

Arguably the most memorable stretch that he’s had in Detroit was in March of 2019, when over the span of three games he hit 12 consecutive three-pointers, which was one shy of the all-time franchise record set by Terry Mills in 1996.
That’s a pretty good example of what Galloway’s time with the Pistons has been like. Going cold for extended stretches and then seemingly out of nowhere, when the team needs it the most, he’ll catch fire.
So while there are certainly times where his production is lacking, the overall scope of his offensive game is something that Detroit can continue to utilize, even if they’re in a rebuild.
The contract he signed in 2017 was a three year deal worth $21 million. If they were able to re-sign him on a similar deal or even for just two years, with a player option on the second, it becomes a mutually beneficial and team friendly contract.
Whether or not Galloway actually wants to return remains to be seen, and although the market on him is unknown, he’ll have suitors. Every single team is always looking to add perimeter shooting.
