Dennis Rodman: Ranking his role with each team he played for
#3 San Antonio Spurs
After the Bad Boys fell apart in the early 90’s, Rodman dealt with the pain of losing the guys that he considered to be brothers for so many years, and the pain he dealt with caused the organization to move him elsewhere, giving him a fresh start.
That fresh start came with the San Antonio Spurs, when he was traded in the fall of 1993. Rodman filled a hole that the team desperately needed, and in his first season with the Spurs he averaged an astonishing 17.3 rebounds per game.
In that same season, David Robinson averaged 29.8 points per game and San Antonio won 55 games.
The issue with Rodman’s time with the Spurs was never what he produced on the floor. He was as good as they needed him to be, and he helped them become an elite team. It was everything that began to culminate off the floor, in what would eventually become his main persona.
The off-color and often eccentric personality that he had was never going to be tolerated with San Antonio, no matter how good he was as a player.
After being suspending by the team in the fall of 1994 for misconduct, it was the beginning of the end for a rather interesting “what if” in NBA history. Had he not been traded to the Bulls, would the Spurs have been able to derail Chicago’s dynasty?
