NBA Player Comparison: Clint Capela

Capela is a bit taller than Okongwu, but the Freshman from USC makes up for it with freakish athleticism. Depending on their draft position, the Pistons should seriously consider taking a chance on a player that fits the mold of the franchise like Okongwu.

Regardless on if the Pistons resign Christian Wood, Okongwu carries value to any team. His high motor and shot blocking ability will allow him to get minutes early. If he can develop some sort of jump shot and low post game, he could turn into a serious threat.

Listed as a center, Okongwu average 16.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season. In what many are calling a somewhat weak draft, the stats and eye test puts Okongwu at the top of big boards. While still a raw talent, Okongwu is only 19 years old.

The fact that he plays with great energy is a good sign for teams in need of defense and athleticism down low.

Okongwu plays a very similar style to Clint Capela, someone who’s had good success as a rim protector and off ball roll-man with the Rockets. Okongwu averaged a ridiculous 2.7 blocks per game last season and projects to have a similar impact defensively as Capela.

As one of the best shot blockers in the game, Capella showed defense still gets you paid – signing a 5 year contract extension worth $90 million last summer.

The Pistons would be happy to have Okongwu as the anchor to their defense for the foreseeable future. The question remains on if they are willing to pass on a talent like Okongwu for a point guard.
