Detroit Pistons long time assistant General Manager Pat Garrity is set to leave the team once his contract expires.

Pat Garrity was hired by the Detroit Pistons in 2014, and was later promoted to assistant General Manager in 2016. Just one month after the team saw Malik Rose depart, the Pistons are set to lose their other assistant GM.

This now gives the recently hired Troy Weaver a clean slate, one that will allow him to shape Detroit’s front office in the way that he sees fit. The plan could very well be to hire two more assistants.

Garrity’s departure isn’t necessarily a surprise. A new regime is in with the Pistons, and it’s time for an overhaul.

This is where fans have anticipated that either Chauncey Billups or Tayshaun Prince could be in the mix. While some wanted them to fill the role of the actual  GM position, assistant would be a way better fit.

People assume that Detroit should follow the same mold that led them to their 2004 championship and hire a former player. However, despite the fact that he’s shown interest in a few management positions, we have no reason to believe that Billups would be well equipped to handle the task.

As it stands, he’s said that he wouldn’t be interested in an assistant position. Prince on the other hand has at least had some front office experience, leading the charge as VP of Basketball Affairs for the Memphis Grizzlies.

It’s also worth noting that no one ever mentions Ben Wallace in these conversations.

Now first of all, we have no reason to believe that Weaver is actually interested in hiring a former player. However, if he was, the Wallace could be the man we’re looking for.

Wallace co-owns the Pistons G-League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive. He’s gaining experience in a management position and is understanding what it takes to run a basketball team.

He’s also clearly still invested in the Michigan area, which is something that is somewhat ambiguous with Prince.
