Detroit Pistons great Chauncey Billups starts coaching career with Clips

There are reports that former Detroit Pistons standout Chauncey Billups has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Los Angeles Clippers.

As first reported by Sham Charania of The Athletic, 2004 NBA finals MVP Chauncey Billups will serve as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers under new head coach Tyronn Lue.

This will be Billups first coaching position. Since playing his final season in the NBA for the Pistons in 2014, he has been focused on broadcasting. Billups served as an analyst for Clippers’ TV games this past season.

The official announcement may not come, if it comes at all, for a while as Billups is still under consideration for the head coaching position of the Indiana Pacers.

For most of the 2000s, Billups was a mainstay in the Pistons lineup as a playmaking/scoring guard and five-time All-Star.

In the 2004 NBA finals against a Los Angeles Lakers team led by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, Billups averaged 21 points, 5.2 assists and 1.2 steals to be named MVP. The Pistons defeated the Lakers, 4-1, to win its latest NBA title.

There are also reports that Larry Drew, a first-round draft selection of Detroit in 1980, will also join Lue’s staff with the Clippers. Drew served as an assistant coach with the Pistons for the 1999-2000 season.
