Former Detroit Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy hired by Pels
Former Detroit Pistons head coach and team president Stan Van Gundy agreed to be the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday.
Since being let go by the Detroit Pistons in 2018, after four years of leading the franchise, Stan Van Gundy has mostly been around NBA games in his role as a television commentator.
However, he will be back on the sidelines next season, as it was announced he has been named the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.
From May 14, 2014 until relieved of his duties on May 7, 2018, Van Gundy served as the president of basketball operations and head coach of the Pistons. He had previously been a head coach with Orlando (reaching the finals in 2009) and the Miami Heat.
Detroit was the first time Van Gundy had such broad executive authority. Reportedly, he will have no executive title with the Pelicans as David Griffin is firmly in charge of basketball management there..
In four seasons with Detroit, Van Gundy had a record of 152-176, with the highlight a 44-38 record and making the playoffs in 2016.
The 61-year-old Van Gundy takes over a team that last season had a record of 30-42. The Pelicans did make it to the Bubble in Orlando but failed to reach the playoffs despite having the easiest schedule.
Despite the losing record, the Pelicans have two of the brightest young talents in the NBA, in forward Zion Williamson, the No. 1 overall draft pick last year, and guard Brandon Ingram, the NBA’s Most Improved Player award winner.
When the Pelicans come to play the Pistons, it will be an interesting experience. Several current players, including Blake Griffin and Luke Kennard, played for Van Gundy during his time in Detroit.
